(Washington, D.C., Tuesday, November 16, 2004) – Dr. Joseph N. Pelton, Director of the Space and Advanced Communications Research Institute (SACRI) at George Washington University and founding President of the Society of Satellite Professionals International, has recently written, or co-edited with colleagues in the field, three books that help present key elements of the space communications industry today and tomorrow. These three books are as follows:

Basics of Satellite Communications, by Joseph N. Pelton (Nov. 2003), Chicago, Illinois, International Engineering Consortium. (Available at www.iec.org). This is an introductory text to the satellite industry for the non-engineer. This book contains no formulas or complex technical minutiae but rather is a straightforward and up-to-date explanation of satellite technology, services and business concerns.

Satellite Communications in the 21st Century: Trends and Technologies, edited by Takashi Iida, Joseph N. Pelton and Ed Ashford, (Oct. 2003) Reston, Virginia, American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics. (Available at www.aiaa.org). This is an advanced book that explains key technologies for the various types of satellite services and current and longer-term trends in the field. This book in the AIAA Progress series offer exercises in question and answer format at the end of chapters.

Satellite Communications: Global Change Agent, edited by Joseph N. Pelton, Robert J. Oslund and Peter Marshall, (June 2004) New York, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Press. (Available at www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com).
This is a comprehensive examination for the more general public of how satellites over the past forty years have changed the world in terms of entertainment, news, education, health care, economic development, access to the Internet, and much, much more. A dozen contributors from around the world helped to bring this comprehensive story of the satellite revolution together.

Dr. Pelton is the former Dean of the International Space University, the former Director of Strategic Policy at Intelsat, a member of the International Academy of Astronautics, a member of the Hall of Fame of the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), the Founder and Vice Chairman of the Board of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation, and the author or editor of some 20 books in the field (including one Pulitzer Prize-nominated text.) He has twice co-chaired the NASA-NSF global review team on satellite technology and systems.

Pelton’s study team at GW University is currently reviewing Shuttle and International Space Station Safety.
